Recorded music is defined by the limitations of its medium. From the wax cylinder onwards, the methods of production and consumption have informed the way we write, perform, record and release music.

Pop songs are traditionally three minutes long because they fit neatly onto one side of a 78″ or 45″ record. When stereo disc mass production arrived in the late 50s, it did so without rules. We can hear the teething pains in jazz records of the era, as producers adopted the technology with no standard practices to adhere to, only new tools to experiment with. By the late 60s, the LP allowed for greater experimentation in song structure and form, giving us concept albums where a single track could last 20 minutes. Digital audio pushed the boundaries of loudness without sacrificing clarity, and boosted bass frequencies exponentially with no fear of the needle bouncing right out of the groove. Streaming services encourage discovery through personalised playlists that, in turn, encourage artists to place their efforts into systematic single releases over albums, so as to maintain algorithmic traction. Social media platforms, such as TikTok, have shaped modern pop songwriting, emphasising the need for immediate, instant likability and to capitalise on even the briefest of trends.

From the wax cylinder onwards, recorded music has always been linear. All contemporary formats are restricted to a finite beginning, middle and end. But, we have the technology freely available to attempt more. CIRCADIA is a multi-formal composition / interactive EP designed using FMOD and Unity. CIRCADIA is a single piece of music that exists in many different states, and what can be heard at any given time is defined by you. It loops seamlessly – simply change the time of year or time of day and the form of the composition will change itself around you.
